Obsessive Pollsters

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Work on the new homepage is still underway. Red-eyed, scruffy developers crowd the water cooler as the race enters its last phase. We’ve been playing with the monster for a week now, and we like it a lot. It will certainly make an impace on the site.

One dilemma we still have, and wish to share with you, is the Obsessive Pollsters dilemma: as you can see, the bottom of our new homepage is dedicated to top users. It includes the following weekly charts:

  • Top Voters: users who voted on most polls that week.
  • Top commentators: users who commented the most that week.
  • Popular pollsters: users who have created the most popular polls that week.
  • Obsessive pollsters: users who have created the most polls that week.

We’re not 100% sure about that last term. What do you think? Should we keep calling it Obsessive pollsters? Or should we change it to something else? got any specific ideas? Let us know.

Vote and comment on our poll:

Pollsb’s Spirit

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

It’s crunch time here. Will the team make it with a ready for QA homepage on Thursday?  Who will win the office pool? (we placed bets on the date in which the new homepage will be ready). In the meantime, here’s another great homepage feature: the Pollsb spirit:

Spirit

The spirit section is a graphical interpretation of the most discussed topics of that week on Pollsb. So, for example, the more political polls get posted, the bigger the politics chunk of the pie chart will be. The drop down menu will also allow you to see the pie chart for different demographics of the general voter population on Pollsb. It’ll show you the most dominant age group in the site, as well as where most voters come from, and what’s the gender segmentation for any given week.

New homepage feature: “Your feeds”

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Day two of our homepage marathon.

Spent some time last night reading all of the comments we received on the homepage poll. Most of you loved it. Some thought it was a bit too busy. We suspect it appears busier than it actually is in the screenshot: the actual design is much bigger, and will spread across your entire screen. At least that’s the opinion of our design guru:

Today I want to write a bit about one of the most exciting elements of our new homepage: the “Your Feeds” section.

Appearing only when a user is logged into the site, and taking the center stage of the new homepage, is a new feed box that will hopefully revolutionize the way you use Pollsb.

It looks something like this (click on the image to enlarge):

The feed box will make it easier to stay on top of everything that’s going on with the site. It’ll notify you whenever someone replies to a comment you made or commented on your polls or on your user page. It’ll let you know when friends of yours post new polls, or vote. It’ll update you on votes your polls are getting, and even send you a notice when a friend of yours adds someone as a friend.

We hope this box will become the first thing you look at, when you log into pollsb, and we designed it to match with lots of feedback we received on our current activity section. As usual, we’d love to get your opinion on this new feature, so just comment here, or send feedback a message on the site. We appreciate it.

Operation Homepage

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

We’ve been secretive about it, but the rumors are true: Pollsb is about to refresh its front page with a whole new look and feel.

Some major changes include moving to a larger screen resolution of 1024×768, featuring results as well as polls, and adding a feed box with updates on your polls, comments, and friends.

People here at the office have already began playing with this beast of a page, testing it out and debugging. We have Thursday set as a possible launch date. So this week at Pollsb HQ, is all about the homepage: design, functionality, bugs, and interface.

I’m going to post updates as the week progresses, and try and get as much feedback from pollsb users as I can. to start, here’s a sneak preview of the new design (click on the thumbnail to enlarge the image). I’d love to hear some first impressions. Just message me on the site with your input, or leave a comment here.

Brand new features

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

It’s an exciting Tuesday morning here at the Polls Boutique labs. We’re all tired and overworked, but we couldn’t be more satisfied: a brand new version of the site is online, and it includes some features that are bound to bring happiness to the lives of pollsters all over the world.

The new features include:

  • Safe browsing: from now on, as a default, you won’t be seeing adult materials on polls boutique, unless you visit your user page and specifically choose to do so by clicking on our new Adult Content button.

Adult content button

  • New Categories: we’ve reorganized the topical poll categories on the site. From now on, when posting a poll, users must choose at least one and up to three categories from a list. This makes browsing categories much more accurate and fun!

New poll categories

  • Block User Option: if you can’t stand someone’s polls, just visit their user page and click “Block this user” and poof! their polls won’t bother you anymore.
  • Private Poll Option: make your poll private, so only people you invite can see it.

There’s much more to come. So hang on, and enjoy the pollsb ride.
