Proudly announcing Pollsb community pages

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

We’ve been thinking about adding more community features to our topic pages for a while now, and last week we’ve softly launched our first two Pollsb communities, starting from the two most popular topics on Pollsb: emo, and Twilight.

On the new community pages users can vote and comment on relevant polls, discuss general emo, or Twilight matters, see statistics and demographic information relating to the active members of the community, and meet people who also care about that topic. We’re going to keep adding features to our community pages, allowing you to follow a certain topic, adding RSS support and more.

Which new categories would you like to see opened as community pages on Pollsb? Let us know. And in the meantime, check out our emo community, and Twilight community.

Find your match on Pollsb

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

We’ve been busy playing matchmakers recently on Pollsb.

The idea: you vote, and we match you with others who share your opinions, displaying the percentage in which you match (based on recent votes you two have in common).

It’s important to remember: the way our opinions based matching mechanism works, The more you vote, the more meaningful the matching stats become. So keep voting for a while to find people who have a lot in common with you.

Find your opinion matches now: Log in to Pollsb, and start voting.

Bella and Edward, a website dedicated to the Twilight book series, polls its readers on their expectations from the upcoming Twilight movie.

Gameriot, a website dedicated to Blizzard games, posted a poll about some controversial new features of Diablo 3, while Diablo3x, another Diablo 3 fansite, posted a poll widget asking about Pvp in Diablo 3.

JBFan, a Jonas Brothers fansite, posts weekly polls on the ever popular Jonas Bros.

Pollsb’s Spirit

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

It’s crunch time here. Will the team make it with a ready for QA homepage on Thursday?  Who will win the office pool? (we placed bets on the date in which the new homepage will be ready). In the meantime, here’s another great homepage feature: the Pollsb spirit:

Spirit

The spirit section is a graphical interpretation of the most discussed topics of that week on Pollsb. So, for example, the more political polls get posted, the bigger the politics chunk of the pie chart will be. The drop down menu will also allow you to see the pie chart for different demographics of the general voter population on Pollsb. It’ll show you the most dominant age group in the site, as well as where most voters come from, and what’s the gender segmentation for any given week.

New buddy icon Feature

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

We are proud to introduce a brand new feature here at pollsb: it’s a way to see the people who voted on a poll, before even voting on it! It’ll help you follow your friends around the site, see who votes on what, and who’s active at the moment. Yep, all that without even having to visit the results page. Isn’t that cool? Here’s how it looks:

Do you like it? Vote on our poll.

Am I emo poll craze

Monday, July 7th, 2008

We’ve had a wave of “am I emo” polls here on Polls Boutique lately. It started with a few users posting their pictures and asking “am I emo?” and turned into a full blitz of other users joining the trend and asking about their emoness (some, obviously not emo).Siouxsie

But that was just the beginning.

Soon enough, pollsb users felt they needed a clarification on what emo exactly is. Was Edward Scissorhands emo? and how about Siouxsie and the Banshees? Were they emo? asked pollsb user Bmccue7.

“What the heck is emo anyway?” asked Officeshrew and received a link to the wikipedia page on emo:

“a style of hardcore punk which describes several variations of music with common roots…Starting in the mid-1990s, the term emo began to refer to the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo… As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the mainstream style. As a result, the term “emo” became a vaguely defined identifier rather than a specific genre of music.”

And on emo fashion:

“Emo is also often associated with a certain fashion. The term “emo” is sometimes stereotyped with tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straight hair, tight t-shirts (sometimes short sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands (or other designer shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes (often old and beaten up) and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.”

But emo is so much more than a music genre. And the people at pollsb wanted to explore the boundaries of the term. Was Adolf Hitler emo? asked Splotzie humorously posting a photoshopped photo of Hitler as an emo kid.

Am I emo? asked Bearden829 with an ‘emofied’ version of her buddy icon pic. What about cats? Can cats be emo? asked someone. And how about this dog? It looks pretty emo. Which of my cars is emo? asked car model enthusiast Bushlightfever.

Raging emo debates started on every one of those polls.Everyone told Bmccue7 he’s definitely more of a hippie than an emo, and almost everyone told Ultranerd he was more of a wannabe emo than a real one. Edward Scissorhands was definitely emo, everyone agreed, but Siouxsie wasn’t, since emo didn’t exist back then.

Now we can’t wait for someone to post the ultimate poll, mashing two of pollsb’s main obsessions into one:

Are the Jonas Brothers emo?

Post the poll, and you will certainly be linked from here.

Brand new features

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

It’s an exciting Tuesday morning here at the Polls Boutique labs. We’re all tired and overworked, but we couldn’t be more satisfied: a brand new version of the site is online, and it includes some features that are bound to bring happiness to the lives of pollsters all over the world.

The new features include:

  • Safe browsing: from now on, as a default, you won’t be seeing adult materials on polls boutique, unless you visit your user page and specifically choose to do so by clicking on our new Adult Content button.

Adult content button

  • New Categories: we’ve reorganized the topical poll categories on the site. From now on, when posting a poll, users must choose at least one and up to three categories from a list. This makes browsing categories much more accurate and fun!

New poll categories

  • Block User Option: if you can’t stand someone’s polls, just visit their user page and click “Block this user” and poof! their polls won’t bother you anymore.
  • Private Poll Option: make your poll private, so only people you invite can see it.

There’s much more to come. So hang on, and enjoy the pollsb ride.
